Toby Wardman, Conductor and Tenor (since April 2024)
Toby Wardman grew up in the English choral world. He has a diploma in choral conducting from the Association of British Choral Directors, and has been leading choirs since 2000. He was based in York, UK until 2016 when he moved to Belgium in the wake of Brexit, and now lives in Mechelen.
Toby has directed chamber choirs, choral societies and youth choirs, as well as the music of churches and cathedrals. His interests lie particularly in European music of the 16th and 17th centuries, English church music, and contemporary music from around the world. The ensemble he founded in York, the Clerkes of All Saints, is one of the north of England’s premier liturgical choirs and has been in residence at several cathedrals. He has directed choral summer schools in Provence, Leuven, and most recently annually in Ghent focusing on early music.
As an occasional composer and arranger, Toby’s works have been performed in English cathedrals and concert halls, on studio recordings and on the BBC. He is a classical guitarist. Alongside his musical activities, he has a “day job” in political and science communication. He joined Melting Vox in April 2024.
